E-1: compact stationary Hydrocollator

The E-1 is the smallest option in this product family. It measures approximately 13 × 8 × 16 inches and comes with four standard HotPacs.

It is best suited for a treatment room or smaller practice where:

  • Four Standard HotPacs provide enough ready inventory.

  • Floor space is limited.

  • A mobile tank is unnecessary.

  • Staff can place the unit on an appropriate stable surface.

  • The clinic wants the lowest-capacity entry into the professional Hydrocollator line.

The E-1 is stationary, so its placement deserves more consideration than simply finding available counter space. The manufacturer requires a smooth, level surface capable of supporting the filled weight, not merely the dry unit.

SS-2: compact mobile model

The SS-2 adds a floor-standing mobile chassis and eight included standard HotPacs while remaining considerably smaller than the M-4. It has an approximate operating capacity of 10 gallons and a footprint of 21 × 16 × 33 inches.

Choose the SS-2 when:

  • Eight ready Standard HotPacs fit better than four HotPacs.

  • Countertop space is unavailable.

  • A floor-standing unit is preferred.

  • The clinic wants casters for positioning an empty or safely prepared unit.

  • M-2 or M-4 capacity would be unnecessary.

The mobile chassis should not be confused with permission to wheel around a tank full of 160°F water. Chattanooga specifically warns not to move a Hydrocollator while it is filled with heated water because tipping creates a burn hazard.

M-2: mid-capacity clinic workhorse

The M-2 is the middle choice for facilities that routinely use more HotPacs but do not require the footprint or 24-pack inventory of the M-4. Includes 12 Standard HotPacs and has dimensions of 27 × 16 × 33 inches.

The M-2 generally makes the most sense when:

  • Several treatment tables share one heat station.

  • Twelve included Standard HotPacs better match the daily turnover.

  • Mobile floor placement is preferable to a stationary tank.

  • The SS-2 would require excessive pack cycling.

  • The M-4 would consume more floor space than the clinic needs.

M-4: highest-capacity Balego option

The M-4 is the largest Hydrocollator in this four-model selector. 27-gallon approximate operating capacity, 35 × 20 × 33-inch dimensions, and 24 included standard hot packs.

It is designed for facilities where the limiting factor is less likely to be tank size and more likely to be the following:

  • Number of concurrent treatment rooms

  • Pack turnover throughout the day

  • Available floor space

  • Water capacity

  • Filled equipment weight

  • Startup planning

Why model capacity matters more than the thermostat

All four models are intended to keep compatible HotPacs in the same general temperature range. Buying a larger Hydrocollator does not mean receiving “hotter” therapy; it primarily means gaining more tank volume and HotPac capacity.

That means clinic selection can be approached as a throughput problem:

Clinic characteristic More likely choice
One treatment room with occasional moist heat E-1
Small multi-table clinic SS-2
Regular moist heat use across several tables M-2
Large PT department or athletic training facility M-4
Limited floor space E-1 or SS-2
Frequent simultaneous HotPac demand M-2 or M-4
Need for oversize/specialty HotPacs in addition to standard inventory Consider larger tank capacity

Actual capacity for mixed HotPac shapes will vary because a standard, neck contour, spinal, and oversize pack occupy different amounts of tank space. We offer those shapes separately on the Hydrocollator Moist Heat HotPac page. The HotPac line currently includes multiple anatomical shapes and sizes.

What comes with each model?

Model Heating unit Included Standard HotPacs
E-1 Chattanooga Hydrocollator 2102 4
SS-2 Chattanooga Hydrocollator 2302 8
M-2 Chattanooga Hydrocollator 2402 12
M-4 Chattanooga Hydrocollator 2502 24

The included packs let a clinic start with a baseline standard HotPac inventory. Additional sizes—including Half Size, Spinal, Knee/Shoulder, Neck Contour, and Oversize—can be ordered from our Hydrocollator HotPac selection.

HotPacs and covers are separate parts of the system

A Hydrocollator unit heats and stores the packs; it is not itself the patient-contact treatment surface.

A complete clinical workflow usually involves:

Component Role
Hydrocollator heating unit Maintains HotPacs in heated water
Hydrocollator Moist Heat HotPac Reusable heat-retaining treatment pack
Hydrocollator All-Terry Cover Provides insulating layers between heated HotPac and the patient.
Towels / facility linens as directed Additional insulation where required
Thermometer / unit controls Verifies proper tank operation

Do not apply a Hydrocollator HotPac directly to the skin, and continually monitor the skin during use.

That safety information is more useful here than duplicating a full moist-heat protocol already covered by associated HotPac literature.

Hydrocollator versus microwave-heated reusable packs

Feature Hydrocollator + HotPacs Microwave-style reusable pack
Heating method Continuously heated water bath Individually reheated
Ready inventory Multiple packs remain available Each pack requires separate heating
Best environment Professional recurring use Lower-volume or individual use
Startup time The unit must reach operating temperature Usually shorter per individual pack
Daily water maintenance Yes No
Tank cleaning Required No tank
Multi-room throughput Strong advantage More manual reheating
Equipment footprint Larger Minimal
Pack temperature consistency Controlled by thermostatic water bath It depends on reheating method
Primary purchasing reason Workflow and repeat availability Simplicity and low infrastructure

For clinics needing only occasional hot/cold applications rather than a continuously maintained HotPac inventory, we also carry reusable hot and cold gel packs. These products solve a different workflow problem and should not be represented as identical to the Hydrocollator system.

Stationary versus mobile Hydrocollator units

The word "mobile" refers to the castered chassis on the SS-2, M-2, and M-4. It does not mean the unit should be transported around a clinic while filled with hot water.

Feature E-1 SS-2 / M-2 / M-4
Design Stationary Floor-standing mobile chassis
Casters No Yes
Typical placement Stable counter or dedicated support Floor
Easier to reposition when safely emptied No Yes
Safe to roll while full of hot water No No
Floor-space requirement Lowest Increases by model

Electrical and installation planning

The current U.S. models are rated at 110–120 V and 1000 W. They do not require a permanent water line, but they do require routine manual filling because evaporation lowers the water level during operation.

Before choosing the installation location, confirm:

  • A properly grounded electrical outlet is available.

  • The surface or floor is level.

  • The installation area can tolerate incidental water exposure.

  • The selected location can support the filled weight.

  • Staff can access the tank safely for filling and drainage.

  • The drain location and cleaning workflow are practical.

  • Mobile units have enough surrounding clearance to service and clean them.

The manufacturer manual calls for a grounded outlet, level support, and adequate load capacity for the filled unit.

Daily water level matters

A Hydrocollator continuously loses water through evaporation. Chattanooga instructs users to monitor and replenish the water daily and to keep the HotPacs fully submerged. Allowing the water level to fall below the packs can damage both the packs and the equipment.

A useful opening checklist is the following:

  1. Inspect the tank and electrical cord.

  2. Confirm that the water covers the HotPacs.

  3. Verify that the unit has reached its prescribed operating range.

  4. Inspect packs for deterioration or leaking filler.

  5. Keep unsuitable metal objects and contaminants away from the tank.

Chattanooga recommends replacing HotPacs when the fabric or filling begins to deteriorate.

Cleaning and maintenance

Hydrocollator ownership involves more maintenance than simply adding water.

The manufacturer calls for the tank to be drained, cleaned, and inspected at least every two weeks, with more frequent cleaning potentially necessary in hard-water conditions. Water should be replenished daily.

Manufacturer maintenance essentials

Maintenance item Manufacturer guidance
Check/add water Daily
Keep packs submerged Yes
Drain and clean the tank. At least every 2 weeks
Hard-water areas May require more frequent cleaning
Bleach/high-chlorine cleaners Do not use
Carbon-steel wool/brush Do not use
Foreign additives or essential oils Do not add
Inspect heating element During regular cleaning
Inspect power cord During regular cleaning
Exterior Non-abrasive stainless-steel care

Excessive chlorine can damage the stainless steel, prohibits bleach/high-chlorine cleaners, and states that improper maintenance can void the warranty.

Do not add essential oils or other substances

The Hydrocollator is designed to heat water and HotPacs. The manufacturer specifically warns that substances such as essential oils, herbal preparations, and other foreign additives can damage the HotPacs and heating unit and may void warranty coverage.

That point is worth including because it addresses a real ownership question without repeating generic heat-therapy information found elsewhere on Balego.

What is the warm-up time?

Warm-up is an equipment-planning specification, not a treatment time.

Model Current manufacturer warm-up specification to 160°F
E-1 Approx. 2 hours
SS-2 Approx. 4 hours
M-2 Approx. 8 hours*
M-4 Approx. 8 hours

For a clinic that opens at 8:00 a.m., this means a large Hydrocollator should generally be thought of as equipment that is brought to operating condition as part of facility startup—not something switched on immediately before the first patient. Exact operational procedures should follow the current unit manual.

Does a bigger Hydrocollator make HotPacs hotter?

No. The current four units share the same specified 160–165°F operating range. The main advantages of a larger model are additional tank capacity and HotPac inventory, not a higher therapeutic temperature.

Professional moist heat safety

Hydrocollator water is much hotter than the temperature normally tolerated directly on human skin. Chattanooga notes that the tank operates around 160°F, while scalding can occur at far lower temperatures, and the manufacturer specifically prohibits applying a HotPac directly against the skin.

Use appropriate insulation such as a compatible Hydrocollator All-Terry Cover, follow the current HotPac instructions, and monitor the treatment area.

Warns against HotPac use over insensitive skin, poor circulation, cuts, abrasions, or wounds and instructs clinicians to exercise particular caution with people unable to communicate excessive heat.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Hydrocollator?

Hydrocollator® is Chattanooga’s registered name for its thermostatically controlled HotPac heating-unit system. The tanks maintain reusable Hydrocollator HotPacs in heated water for professional moist-heat workflows.

Which Hydrocollator is the smallest?

The E-1 is the smallest model offered on this Balego page. Chattanooga currently lists dimensions of approximately 13 × 8 × 16 inches and includes four standard HotPacs.

Which model holds the most HotPacs?

The M-4 package includes 24 Standard HotPacs and is the highest-capacity model.

What is the difference between SS-2 and M-2?

Both are mobile floor units. The SS-2 comes with eight Standard HotPacs, while the M-2 comes with 12 and has a longer footprint and greater listed tank capacity.

What is the difference between M-2 and M-4?

The M-4 is substantially larger. It includes 24 Standard HotPacs versus 12 with the M-2 and has approximately twice the currently listed water capacity.

Do the units require plumbing?

No permanent plumbing is required. Water is added manually, and the unit must be periodically drained and cleaned.

How hot does a Hydrocollator get?

The normal manufacturer-specified operating range is approximately 160–165°F (71–74°C). That temperature refers to the tank water, not a safe direct-to-skin application temperature.

Can a HotPac be applied directly to the skin?

No. Chattanooga specifically states not to apply a Hydrocollator HotPac directly to skin. Use appropriate insulation and follow current application instructions.

Can I wheel an SS-2, M-2, or M-4 into another room while it is full?

Not while it contains heated water. The manufacturer warns against moving a filled Hydrocollator because tipping can cause burns.

How often should the Hydrocollator be cleaned?

Chattanooga recommends draining and cleaning at least every two weeks, with more frequent cleaning potentially needed in challenging water conditions.

Does the water need to be changed daily?

The manual specifically requires checking and adding water daily because of evaporation, while the tank itself should be regularly drained and cleaned.

Can bleach be used to disinfect the tank?

No. The manufacturer says not to use bleach or cleaners with high chlorine content because they can damage the stainless steel.

Can essential oils be added to the water?

No. Chattanooga states that substances such as essential oils and herbal preparations can damage the tank and HotPacs and may void the warranty.

Do all four models operate at the same temperature?

Yes. Chattanooga’s current U.S. specifications list 160–165°F for E-1, SS-2, M-2, and M-4.

Are HotPacs included?

Yes, our current configurations include four with E-1, eight with SS-2, 12 with M-2, and 24 with M-4.

Can other HotPac sizes be purchased?

Yes. We offer Hydrocollator HotPacs in standard, half-size, spinal, knee/shoulder, neck contour, and oversize configurations.

What is the manufacturer warranty?

The available Chattanooga Hydrocollator manual documents a one-year warranty against defects in materials and workmanship, subject to its conditions and exclusions. Balego should link or supply the current warranty documentation with the product rather than paraphrasing it as an unconditional guarantee.

Professional equipment notice: Hydrocollator Heating Units contain water maintained at temperatures capable of causing burns. Install, operate, maintain and service the unit according to the current Chattanooga instructions. Do not apply heated HotPacs directly to skin, do not move a unit while it contains heated water, and monitor patients during moist-heat application.

Stella ★★★★★

The thermostat holds the temp rock-steady even after hours of continuous use, which is a lifesaver during a packed clinic day. I've had mine loaded with six standard packs and it still heats evenly.

Timothy K. ★★★★★

The four-pack capacity means I'm not constantly swapping sleeves between patients during back-to-back appointments. Water stays consistently hot all day, and the reusable packs come out soft and ready to drape. Setup took maybe twenty minutes.

Adam B. ★★★★★

The M-2 keeps six HotPacs ready at once, which is perfect for our clinic's back-to-back appointments. Water stays at temperature all day and I'm not babysitting a stove anymore. Took a bit to figure out the initial heat-up, but it's been running daily for months without a hiccup.
