Learn the correct way to clean TENS and EMS electrodes with Parker Protex Ultra Disinfectant Wipes without damaging the adhesive or gel.
Quick answer
Use Parker Protex Ultra Disinfectant Wipes to gently wipe the non-adhesive side and edges of reusable electrodes after each patient or session, but never apply them directly to the adhesive gel.
Why choose Protex Ultra for electrode cleaning
Unlike bulk spray disinfectants, Protex Ultra wipes deliver a premeasured amount of disinfectant without creating mist that could settle on the adhesive layer. This reduces the risk of contaminating the gel or causing it to dry out prematurely.
The wipes are designed for hard, non-porous surfaces common in rehab clinics—exactly the kind of surface found on electrode backing and lead wire connectors. They are not intended for the porous adhesive foam or hydrogel itself.
Step-by-step cleaning guide
- 1. Remove the electrode from the patient: Gently peel the electrode away from the skin. Avoid pulling the lead wire. Place the electrode on a clean, dry, non-porous surface with the adhesive side facing up. Do not place the electrode adhesive-side down on a dirty surface—this transfers debris onto the gel.
- 2. Wipe the backing and edges: Take a fresh Protex Ultra wipe and gently wipe the hard plastic or cloth backing of the electrode. Also wipe the outer edges where the backing meets the adhesive. Do not touch the adhesive gel with the wipe. If the wipe accidentally contacts the gel, discard that electrode—the disinfectant can break down the adhesive bond.
- 3. Wipe the lead wire connector: Use the same wipe (or a fresh one if needed) to clean the snap or pin connector and the lead wire end. This prevents cross-contamination between patients. Allow the connector to air-dry fully before reattaching to the electrode to avoid shorting the connection.
- 4. Let the electrode air-dry completely: Leave the electrode on the clean surface for at least 30 seconds to allow the disinfectant to dry. Then store the electrode in a sealed bag or its original packaging. Storing a damp electrode in a sealed bag promotes mold growth and ruins the adhesive.
