Category: Compression Therapy

The IMAK® Compression Arthritis Knee Sleeve is a soft, cotton-rich knee support designed to provide mild compression, warmth, and flexible coverage during everyday movement. Its pull-on construction surrounds the knee without the rigid hinges, stays, or adjustable straps found on heavier orthopedic braces.

A vented panel behind the knee supports airflow and easier bending, while IMAK’s tri-band retention design helps the upper edge remain in place and resist rolling. The closed-patella construction provides continuous fabric coverage across the front of the knee rather than using an open kneecap cutout.

The sleeve is sold individually, fits either knee, and comes in five sizes. Measure the leg 4 inches above the center of the kneecap before choosing a size.

IMAK Arthritis Knee Sleeve size chart

Measure the circumference of the leg 4 inches above the center of the kneecap.

Size Leg circumference Brownmed item number
X-Small 13–15 in. A20149
Small 15–17 in. A20150
Medium 17–19 in. A20151
Large 19–21 in. A20152
X-Large 21–23 in. A20153

How to measure your leg

  1. Stand with the leg relaxed and the knee only slightly bent.

  2. Locate the center of the kneecap.

  3. Measure 4 inches upward toward the thigh.

  4. Wrap a flexible measuring tape around the leg at that point.

  5. Keep the tape flat and level without pulling it into the skin.

  6. Compare the circumference with the size chart.

  7. Measure both legs if their dimensions differ.

Do not intentionally order a smaller size to create firmer compression. This product is designed for mild pressure and does not provide an adjustable or clinically measured compression level.

How should the knee sleeve fit?

The sleeve should feel close and supportive while allowing comfortable knee bending and straightening. It should not create throbbing, pinching, or altered sensations below the knee.

Fit observation What it may indicate
Fabric lies smoothly above and below the joint Size is likely appropriate
Knee bends comfortably while sitting or walking The sleeve is not excessively restrictive
The rear panel remains centered behind the knee The sleeve is positioned correctly
Upper bands remain flat instead of rolling The retention section is functioning as intended
The sleeve repeatedly moves down the leg The size may be too large
The upper edge digs deeply into the thigh The size may be too small
Fabric bunches behind the bent knee The sleeve may need repositioning
The foot becomes cold, pale, numb or unusually red Remove the sleeve immediately
Swelling develops above or below the sleeve Fit and product choice should be reassessed

The leg can change circumference during the day because of activity or swelling. Recheck comfort periodically rather than assuming that a sleeve fitted in the morning will remain appropriate all day.

How to put on the sleeve

  1. Apply the sleeve to clean, dry, and intact skin.

  2. Remove jewelry or clothing that may become trapped beneath it.

  3. Gather the sleeve into a shorter ring rather than pulling from the top edge.

  4. Insert the foot and guide the sleeve over the calf.

  5. Pull it gradually toward the knee using both hands.

  6. Center the knee within the main body of the sleeve.

  7. Position the black vented panel behind the knee.

  8. Place the tri-band section on the lower thigh.

  9. Smooth wrinkles without overstretching the upper edge.

  10. Walk, sit, and bend the knee to check movement and fit.

Pulling repeatedly on only one section can stretch the fabric or cause the upper retention bands to sit unevenly.

Closed-patella coverage without rigid stabilization

The IMAK sleeve continuously covers the front of the knee. It does not contain a kneecap opening, patellar ring, or tracking buttress.

That construction may appeal to someone who wants the following:

  • Uniform fabric coverage across the joint

  • Warmth over the front of the knee

  • A simple pull-on sleeve

  • Flexible movement without rigid hardware

  • A lower-profile option beneath clothing

  • Mild rather than firm compression

It is not designed to mechanically reposition the kneecap, limit side-to-side movement, or prevent the knee from giving way.

Vented back for easier bending

The panel behind the knee is made to flex at the joint crease and provide more ventilation than a solid, heavy support. This can make the sleeve easier to use while sitting, walking, or completing light daily activities.

The panel still needs to be positioned correctly. Twisted or folded fabric behind the knee can create concentrated pressure when the leg is bent.

Tri-band retention design

The upper section uses IMAK’s tri-band design to help the sleeve remain in position and reduce rolling. Unlike an adjustable strap, the amount of tension cannot be changed independently.

It includes a silicone warning for this product. Silicone banding may irritate people with contact dermatitis or a tendency toward certain skin rashes. Do not use the sleeve if you are allergic to any of its materials, and apply it only to intact, undamaged skin.

Everyday use by activity

Activity How the sleeve may fit the task Important limitation
Walking and errands Flexible fabric permits routine knee movement Does not provide instability control
Standing at work Mild compression and warmth may feel supportive Recheck fit if the leg swells during the day
Desk work A low-profile design fits beneath many garments Smooth the rear panel before prolonged sitting
Stairs The sleeve does not block normal knee bending It cannot correct weakness or unsafe stair mechanics
Gardening Flexible design permits kneeling and bending Provides no puncture or abrasion protection
Light exercise May be worn during an approved activity program Not designed as a powerlifting or impact-protection sleeve
Travel Compact and easy to pack Prolonged sitting requires regular movement as medically appropriate
Rest Cotton-rich fabric may feel comfortable Remove it if pressure, itching or heat develops
Nighttime use The manufacturer positions it for day or night comfort Do not sleep through numbness, tingling or constriction

The sleeve does not increase leg strength or correct altered walking mechanics. Activity progression should still be based on symptoms, strength, balance, and professional guidance.

IMAK knee sleeve compared with other knee supports

Support type Primary purpose Motion restriction Best suited to
IMAK Arthritis Knee Sleeve Mild compression, warmth and flexible coverage Minimal Routine daily comfort
Open-patella sleeve Flexible compression with an uncovered kneecap Minimal Users who prefer less pressure directly over the patella
Patellar tendon strap Localized pressure beneath the kneecap Minimal Selected tendon-loading programs
Knee stabilizer Side supports or flexible stays Low to moderate Users requiring more stability than a fabric sleeve
Hinged knee brace Controls side-to-side or rotational movement Moderate Ligament injury or instability when selected professionally
Unloader brace Shifts load away from one knee compartment Moderate Selected unicompartmental knee osteoarthritis
Knee immobilizer Maintains the leg in a limited position High Injury or postoperative use when prescribed
Medical compression garment Delivers a specified compression profile Minimal Clinician-directed edema or vascular management

A mild sleeve should not be substituted for a brace selected to control instability, alignment, or range of motion.

Is this an unloader brace for knee osteoarthritis?

No. Unloader braces use a structured frame and adjustable forces to shift load away from one part of the knee. The IMAK product provides general mild compression without mechanically unloading a particular joint compartment.

AAOS guidance states that brace treatment may improve pain, function, and quality of life for some people with knee osteoarthritis. The evidence includes multiple brace designs, however, and should not be interpreted as proof that every soft sleeve produces the same result. Exercise remains a strongly recommended part of knee-osteoarthritis management.

Is it suitable for knee instability?

The sleeve does not have:

  • Medial or lateral hinges

  • Rigid side supports

  • Adjustable stabilization straps

  • A patellar tracking buttress

  • A range-of-motion stop

  • An offloading frame

People whose knees buckle, give way, or feel mechanically unstable should seek an appropriate assessment instead of relying on a mild fabric sleeve.

How this sleeve fits with other our products

A compression sleeve addresses a different goal from temperature therapy, exercise equipment, or topical medication.

Balego option Primary role Key distinction
IMAK Arthritis Knee Sleeve Mild compression and warmth during activity Wearable flexible support
Uni-Patch Reusable Hot and Cold Gel Packs Time-limited heat or cold applications Temperature therapy rather than continuous compression
Uni-Patch Elastic Wrap with Velcro Closure Helps secure a compatible therapy pack Adjustable wrap; pack sold separately
ORTHOGEL Advanced Pain Relief Gel OTC menthol analgesic for labeled minor aches Medication, not structural support
Resistance Therapy Flat Stretch Bands Progressive strengthening and mobility exercise Provides resistance rather than compression
Balego EMS Digital NMES Stimulator Clinician-directed muscle activation Electrical muscle stimulation rather than a knee brace

These products are not automatic substitutes or a required bundle. Our Pain Management Modalities in Rehabilitation guide explains how different interventions are selected according to the clinical objective.

For post-surgical quadriceps activation rather than general sleeve use, see Balego’s separate NMES After Knee Surgery guide.

Realistic expectations for compression sleeves

The product’s most supportive functions are as follows:

  • Mild compression

  • Warmth

  • Soft joint coverage

  • A supported feeling during routine movement

  • Increased awareness of the knee

  • Flexible wear beneath some clothing

The product page should not promise that the sleeve will:

  • Regrows cartilage

  • Cures osteoarthritis

  • Repairs a ligament or meniscus

  • Permanently removes swelling

  • Restores circulation

  • Prevents knee replacement

  • Corrects patellar tracking

  • Prevents all knee injuries

  • Replaces exercise or medical treatment

The Arthritis Foundation has included the sleeve in its Ease of Use program. That program assesses accessibility and usability for people with arthritis and other physical limitations; it does not establish that the product cures arthritis or works equally well for every user.

Who may prefer this sleeve?

The IMAK sleeve may be a practical choice for someone who:

  • Wants mild rather than firm compression

  • Prefers cotton-rich fabric to thick neoprene

  • Wants the front of the kneecap covered

  • Does not require rigid support

  • Wants a pull-on design without straps

  • Needs a low-profile option for routine activity

  • Values a vented area behind the knee

  • Can measure the leg and monitor fit

  • Can independently check skin color, sensation and swelling

When another product may be more appropriate

Consider professional guidance when the goal involves:

  • Controlling knee instability

  • Protecting an acute ligament injury

  • Restricting range of motion

  • Postoperative bracing

  • Offloading one side of the knee

  • Managing significant edema

  • Applying a prescribed compression pressure

  • Correcting patellar tracking

  • Protecting the knee from occupational impact

New knee pain should not automatically be attributed to arthritis.

When to remove the sleeve

Stop wearing it if you develop:

  • Increasing pain

  • Numbness or tingling

  • Throbbing

  • A cold foot

  • Pale, blue or unusually red skin

  • New swelling below or above the sleeve

  • Skin irritation or a rash

  • Difficulty bending or straightening the knee

  • Increased unsteadiness while walking

  • Deep pressure marks that do not resolve

Seek medical assessment for sudden swelling, a red or hot joint, inability to bear weight, a recent fall, a locked knee, progressive weakness, calf pain, shortness of breath, or symptoms that are new or unexplained.

Cleaning and care

Brownmed directs users to the following:

  1. Hand wash the sleeve in cold water.

  2. Air dry it completely.

Do not wring, bleach, iron, or use high dryer heat. Reshape the sleeve before drying and ensure the rear panel and upper bands lie flat. Inspect the seams and retention bands periodically.

Frequently asked questions

Is the sleeve sold in pairs?

No. Each package contains one sleeve that can be worn on the right or left knee.

Where do I measure my leg?

Measure the leg circumference 4 inches above the center of the kneecap. Do not measure directly around the kneecap.

What sizes are available?

The sleeve is available in XS, S, M, L, and XL, covering manufacturer measurement ranges from 13 to 23 inches.

What is the sleeve made from?

The material is 92% cotton and 8% spandex.

Is the kneecap open?

No. This is a closed-patella sleeve, so fabric covers the front of the kneecap.

Does it contain hinges or metal stays?

No. It is a flexible fabric sleeve without rigid side supports.

Is the compression adjustable?

No. Compression is determined by the material and selected size. There are no straps for increasing or decreasing pressure.

Does it provide medical-grade compression?

Brownmed describes the product as providing mild compression but does not publish a graduated mmHg rating. It should not be marketed as a medical-grade vascular or lymphedema garment.

Can it be worn beneath clothing?

Its low-profile fabric construction can fit beneath many loose or stretch garments. Tight clothing may cause the sleeve to bunch up or add unwanted pressure.

Can it be worn while walking?

Yes, when the sleeve fits correctly and walking is otherwise appropriate. It does not stabilize an unstable knee or replace a walking aid.

Can it be worn at night?

The sleeve is for day or night comfort. Remove it if it causes pressure, overheating, itching, numbness, or changes in foot color or temperature.

Does the sleeve contain silicone?

Warning that silicone banding may cause irritation in people with contact dermatitis or certain skin sensitivities. Do not use it if you are allergic to its materials.

Will it cure knee arthritis?

No. The sleeve may provide warmth and a supportive feeling, but it does not cure arthritis, regenerate cartilage, or change the underlying disease.

How should it be washed?

Hand wash it in cold water and allow it to air dry fully.

Product-use notice: The IMAK Compression Arthritis Knee Sleeve provides mild compression, warmth and flexible knee coverage. It is not a rigid brace, unloader orthosis, protective sports sleeve or prescribed medical-compression garment. Stop use if it causes pain, numbness, tingling, swelling, skin irritation or changes in foot color or temperature.
