Learn how to choose and apply elastic wraps to secure hot or cold packs during therapy. Step-by-step instructions with common mistakes to avoid.
Quick answer
Choose an elastic wrap with a Velcro closure that fits the body part snugly but not too tight, then apply it over your hot or cold pack to keep it in place hands-free.
Why use an elastic wrap instead of tape or a towel
Elastic wraps with hook-and-loop closures let you adjust tension without cutting or re-wrapping, and they stay put during movement. Unlike towels or medical tape, they are reusable and less likely to irritate skin when applied over a hot or cold pack.
Choosing the right size and material
Wraps come in widths from 2 to 12 inches. For a wrist or ankle, a 2- to 4-inch wrap works best; for a knee or thigh, choose a 6- to 8-inch wrap. Material matters: nylon-and-rubber blends (like Nylatex) offer more stretch and conform better to curved joints, while standard elastic wraps are lighter and easier to clean.
How to apply an elastic wrap for hot or cold therapy
- Step 1: Place the pack on the treatment area: Position your hot or cold pack directly over the sore muscle or joint. Make sure the pack covers the area without hanging off the edge. If the pack is too large for the body part, fold it or use a smaller pack to ensure even contact.
- Step 2: Start the wrap below the pack: Hold the elastic wrap with the Velcro tab facing outward. Begin wrapping one full turn below the pack, keeping the wrap flat and slightly stretched (about 20-30% tension). Do not overstretch—too much tension can restrict blood flow or cause discomfort.
- Step 3: Wrap over the pack in a spiral: Continue wrapping upward in a spiral, overlapping each layer by half the wrap's width. Cover the entire pack and about an inch of skin above and below it. Avoid wrapping too tightly over joints—leave a finger's width of space under the wrap to check tension.
- Step 4: Secure the Velcro closure: Press the hook-and-loop tab firmly onto the wrap's surface. The wrap should feel snug but not painful, and the pack should not shift when you move. If the closure slips during use, the wrap may be too loose or the pile surface may be worn—replace it if needed.
- Step 5: Remove and store the wrap after use: Unfasten the Velcro and gently unwind the wrap. Let it air dry if damp, then roll it loosely for storage. Avoid folding or creasing the Velcro area. Wash the wrap per the manufacturer's instructions to maintain elasticity and hook-and-loop grip.
