Category: Pillows

The Core Products D-Core® Cervical Support Pillow is a firm, fiber-filled sleeping pillow built around a recessed D-shaped center, two different cervical-roll profiles, and raised side-sleeping areas.

Instead of asking you to choose only one neck-support height, the pillow can be rotated so either the smaller or larger cervical roll sits beneath the neck during back sleeping. Move onto either raised outer section for side sleeping.

The D-Core is available in full and midsize, with a single firm support level. That makes the main buying decision relatively straightforward: choose the overall pillow size first, then choose the neck roll each night according to the support profile you prefer.

What Makes the D-Core Different?

The feature that gives this pillow its name is the D-shaped recessed center.

During back sleeping, the head rests in that center section while one of the two cervical rolls sits beneath the neck. For side sleeping, the head moves from the recessed center onto one of the taller outer sections.

D-Core area Function
D-shaped center Creates the recessed head area used during back sleeping
Smaller cervical roll Provides the lower/moderate of the two neck-support profiles
Larger cervical roll Provides the more prominent neck-support profile
Raised left side Side-sleeping surface
Raised right side Side-sleeping surface

This is a different design from simply placing a cylindrical neck roll underneath a conventional pillow. The support zones are built into one fiber-filled sleeping surface.

D-Core Full Size vs. Midsize

Choosing the correct overall pillow size is the first decision.

Full Size Midsize
Current Core specification 24" × 16" × 5" 22" × 15" × 4"
Manufacturer height guideline Generally over 5'6" Generally about 4'10"–5'6"
Firmness Firm Firm
Cervical rolls 2 2
D-shaped center Yes Yes
Raised side areas Yes Yes
Colors White / Gray White / Gray
Standard pillowcase compatible Yes Yes

Height is only a starting guideline. Neck length, overall body proportions, and mattress firmness can affect which size feels appropriate, so full should not automatically be equated with “adult” and midsize with “small person.”

Consider full size when:

  • You generally fall above the 5'6" starting guideline.

  • You prefer the larger 24 × 16-inch sleeping surface.

  • Your proportions or mattress setup make the larger profile a better fit.

Consider midsize when:

  • You generally fall within the manufacturer's 4'10"–5'6" starting range.

  • You want a smaller overall pillow.

  • Your neck length, body proportions, or sleep setup favors the more compact size.

Size determines the overall geometry of the pillow. It is not the same decision as choosing the smaller or larger cervical roll.

Which D-Core Neck Roll Should You Use?

The two long edges of the pillow provide different cervical-support profiles.

For back sleeping, it is recommended to start with the smaller-diameter roll. Rotate the pillow 180 degrees if you prefer the more prominent support provided by the larger roll.

Neck-roll choice General use
Smaller roll Recommended manufacturer starting position: lower of the two support profiles
Larger roll More prominent cervical-support profile

Think of this feature as a geometry adjustment, not a firmness selector.

Both rolls are part of the same Firm D-Core pillow.

Three Ways the D-Core Can Be Adjusted

One reason the D-Core deserves a more detailed buying page is that it actually has three separate fitting variables:

Adjustment What changes
Full vs. Midsize Overall pillow dimensions and geometry
Smaller vs. larger cervical roll Neck-support profile during back-sleeping
Fiber redistribution Local fullness within the fiber-filled pillow

instructions for redistributing the fiber through fluffing if a cervical area feels too soft or too firm. This process is different from removing foam inserts or selecting another purchased firmness.

That distinction matters: the D-Core comes in one firm support level, but the polyester fiber can be redistributed within the pillow to help maintain the intended shape.

D-Core vs. Tri-Core: What Is the Difference?

This is likely the most important comparison for shoppers deciding between Core Products' two fiber-filled cervical pillows.

Feature D-Core Tri-Core Cervical Support Pillow
Fill Polyester fiber Polyester fiber
Center shape D-shaped recessed center Trapezoid-style recessed center
Sleep positions Back + side Back + side
Cervical rolls 2 2
Overall sizes Full, Midsize Full, Midsize, Petite
Firmness choices Firm only Firm, Gentle available on Full/Midsize
Raised side areas Yes Yes
Main selection advantage A simpler two-size, Firm system with distinctive D-shaped center More overall sizing and firmness choices

identifies the center shape and available sizing/firmness choices as the primary difference: D-Core has a recessed D-shaped center, two sizes, and one firmness. Tri-Core uses a different recessed-center geometry and provides three sizes plus additional firmness choices.

Choose the D-Core when you want the firmer, simpler two-size system and specifically prefer its D-shaped center.

Choose the Tri-Core Cervical Support Pillow when petite sizing or a gentle support option is important.

D-Core vs. BowTie Cervical Pillow

Both are fiber-filled pillows designed for back and side sleeping, but their fitting systems are substantially different.

Feature D-Core BowTie Cervical Support Pillow
Construction Polyester fiber Polyester fiber
Overall sizes Full + Midsize One Full-size format
Cervical rolls 2 defined profiles No comparable dual-roll selection system
Center D-shaped recessed center Lower bow-shaped center
Raised side-sleep areas Yes Wing-style side sections
Firmness Firm Fixed fiber configuration
Main reason to choose More structured size + roll selection Simpler fiber-filled back/side pillow

Choose the BowTie Cervical Support Pillow when simplicity is the priority and you do not need the D-Core's separate full/midsize sizing and two-roll selection system.

D-Core vs. Adjustable Foam Cervical Pillows

The D-Core uses polyester fiber, which makes its adjustment strategy fundamentally different from our foam cervical pillows.

Pillow Construction How support changes Best reason to choose
D-Core Polyester fiber Size + two rolls + fiber redistribution Firm fiber feel with D-shaped back-sleeping center
Double Core Select Precision-cut polyurethane foam Four interchangeable firmness inserts + two lobes You want to change firmness substantially after purchase
Tri-Core Ultimate Molded polyurethane foam Rotate among 4 back positions and 2 side heights You want multiple fixed support geometries in molded foam
Therapeutica Cervical Pillow Molded foam Anatomical size + firmness selection You want a more measurement-driven fitting system

The Double Core Select Adjustable Cervical Pillow, for example, includes four interchangeable cervical-roll inserts ranging from Gentle through Extra-Firm. The D-Core does not use removable firmness inserts.

The Therapeutica Cervical Pillow uses more specialized molded back/side sleeping geometry and a separate anatomical sizing system. Its detailed fitting information is intentionally kept on that product page rather than repeated here.

Fiber-Filled D-Core vs. Molded Foam

The material changes how the pillow behaves.

D-Core fiber construction Molded/precision-cut foam
Filled with loose, resilient polyester fiber The shape is cut or molded into foam
Fiber can be redistributed by fluffing Geometry remains more fixed
More similar to a traditional filled pillow More structured foam feel
D-Core is available only in Firm Firmness systems vary by model
No removable foam inserts Some Balego models include replaceable inserts

Neither construction is inherently better.

Choose the D-Core when you specifically want fiber fill plus structured cervical geometry. Choose a foam model when a more fixed contour or interchangeable foam firmness system is the primary goal.

How to Position the D-Core for Back Sleeping

  1. Place the pillow so the smaller cervical roll is beneath the neck.

  2. Allow the head to rest within the recessed D-shaped center.

  3. Use that orientation first while becoming accustomed to the pillow.

  4. If you prefer a more prominent support profile, rotate the D-Core so the larger cervical roll is beneath the neck.

  5. If necessary, alternate with your previous pillow during the adjustment period.

A cervical support pillow can feel substantially different from a conventional pillow and recommends gradual adjustment rather than immediately forcing prolonged use.

How to Position the D-Core for Side Sleeping

For side sleeping, move the head away from the recessed center and onto one of the raised outer sections.

Those side sections provide a different sleeping height than the central back-sleeping area. This is why the D-Core should not be treated like a flat pillow where the same surface is used regardless of sleeping position.

Materials, Pillowcase & Care

The D-Core is filled with 100% virgin polyester fiber inside a cotton/polyester shell and is listed by Core Products as not made with natural rubber latex. It is assembled in the USA from globally sourced materials.

The pillow fits a standard pillowcase. Current care instructions specify cold hand washing with mild soap followed by flat drying; do not machine wash or machine dry.

What to Expect After Unpacking

compresses the D-core for shipping.

A newly opened pillow may therefore look flatter or less defined than the finished product images. The manufacturer says it can take several days for the pillow to fully recover its intended shape after compressed packaging.

Fluffing and redistributing the fiber can also help restore the cervical-roll areas after unpacking.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the D-Core a memory-foam pillow?

No. The D-Core uses 100% virgin polyester fiber fill, not memory foam.

Is the D-Core Firm or Gentle?

The current D-Core is offered in Firm only. Unlike the Tri-Core, it does not have a separate gentle purchasing option.

What is the difference between Full and Midsize D-Core pillows?

Full is the larger version, while midsize reduces the overall pillow dimensions. Core currently uses height ranges as an initial sizing guideline but also notes that neck length, proportions, and mattress firmness can affect the choice.

Which D-Core neck roll should I start with?

It recommends starting with the smaller cervical roll for back sleeping. Rotate the pillow to the larger roll if you later prefer a more prominent support profile.

Can side sleepers use the D-Core?

Yes. The pillow has raised outer sleeping areas specifically intended for side sleeping. The recessed D-shaped center is used primarily for back sleeping.

Can I adjust the D-Core pillow?

The pillow does not have interchangeable firmness inserts, but Core Products provides instructions for redistributing the polyester fiber by fluffing when the cervical-roll area needs reshaping.

Does the D-Core fit a regular pillowcase?

Yes. Full and midsize. D-Core pillows fit standard pillowcases, although midsize naturally has more room inside the case.

What is the difference between D-Core and Tri-Core?

The major differences are center shape, number of sizes, and firmness choices. The D-Core features a recessed D-shaped center, is available in full and midsize, and offers firm support. Tri-Core offers three overall sizes and Gentle as an additional support option for selected sizes.

Which Cervical Pillow Fits Your Priorities?

Your priority Start with
Firm fiber pillow + D-shaped center + two neck rolls D-Core Cervical Support Pillow
Fiber fill + more size/firmness choices Tri-Core Cervical Support Pillow
Simple one-size fiber back/side pillow BowTie Cervical Support Pillow
Four interchangeable firmness inserts Double Core Select Cervical Pillow
Six molded-foam support orientations Tri-Core Ultimate Cervical Pillow
Measurement-driven molded back/side pillow Therapeutica Cervical Pillow

The D-Core's clearest place in our lineup is a firm, fiber-filled cervical pillow with a distinctive D-shaped head cradle, two back-sleeping neck-roll profiles, two overall sizes, and raised side-sleeping surfaces.

Customer Reviews (4.8 / 5 · 5 reviews)

Abigail Z. ★★★★★

The recessed D-shaped center keeps my head perfectly aligned, which has helped ease my neck stiffness within a week. I appreciate having both firmness options to switch between depending on how sore I feel.

Natalie N. ★★★★★

Switching between the two cervical-roll profiles really helped me dial in the support I needed. My neck feels noticeably less stiff each morning now.

George W. ★★★★★

I've been waking up with way less neck stiffness since switching to this, mostly because of the raised side panels that keep my head level when I roll onto my side. The fiber fill is firmer than my old pillow, which took a couple nights to get used to, but now it feels right.
