The Core Products Tri-Core® Cervical Support Pillow is a fiber-filled sleeping pillow designed around two different sleep positions and two different fitting decisions.

For back sleeping, the pillow uses a recessed center with two different cervical-roll sizes. Turn the pillow so either the smaller or larger roll rests beneath the neck. For side sleeping, move onto one of the raised outer sections, which provides a taller surface for the head.

What separates this Tri-Core from many cervical pillows is its construction. Instead of molded foam, removable foam inserts, or an inflatable chamber, it uses high-resiliency polyester fiber fill inside a shaped pillow shell. It is also offered in three physical sizes, with firm or gentle support available in selected sizes.

Start With Two Questions: What Size and What Support Level?

With the standard Tri-Core, size and firmness are separate decisions.

Size changes the overall dimensions of the pillow. Firm versus gentle changes how densely and firmly the fiber supports the sleeper.

That distinction matters because selecting a larger pillow is not the same thing as selecting firmer support.

Tri-Core Size Guide

Tri-Core size Dimensions Manufacturer's starting guideline Available support
Full Size 24" × 16" × 5" Generally over 5'6" Firm or Gentle
Midsize 22" × 15" × 4" Generally 4'10"–5'6" Firm or Gentle
Petite 19" × 12" × 4" Generally under 4'10" Firm

Those height ranges are a starting point, not an absolute fitting rule. Neck length, body proportions, and mattress firmness can affect which pillow feels appropriate, so pillow size should not simply be equated with clothing size.

Full Size

Choose Full when you want the largest Tri-Core sleeping surface and your proportions fall within the manufacturer's general full-size range. It is available in both firm and gentle support.

Midsize

Choose midsize when you want the same basic Tri-Core layout in a smaller 22 × 15-inch format. Both firm and gentle versions are available.

Petite

The Petite measures 19 × 12 inches and is intended for smaller-framed sleepers, according to Core Products' general sizing guidance.

Tri-Core Firm vs. Gentle: What's the Difference?

The Gentle model is not a completely different pillow shape. It uses less fiber, slightly reducing the height and firmness compared with the standard Firm version.

Support choice Construction difference General reason to consider it
Firm More structured fiber fill You prefer a more prominent, resistant cervical-support feel
Gentle / Medium Firm Less fiber and slightly reduced height/firmness You prefer less resistance or are transitioning from a conventional pillow

The gentle option is moderate-to-firm rather than soft. It is currently offered in full and midsize only.

A useful way to think about the selection is the following:

Choose the pillow size when ordering. Choose "firm" or "gentle" when ordering. Choose the smaller or larger neck roll when positioning the pillow for back sleep.

Those are three separate adjustments.

How the Tri-Core Changes Between Back and Side Sleeping

Back sleeping

Place one of the cervical rolls beneath the neck while the head rests in the recessed center.

Recommends beginning with the smaller-diameter roll. If a more prominent support profile is preferred after becoming accustomed to the pillow, rotate it so the larger roll is beneath the neck.

Side sleeping

Move the head from the center onto one of the raised side areas.

These outer sections are intentionally higher than the recessed back-sleeping center. That gives the same pillow two distinct sleeping surfaces rather than asking the user to place the head in the center regardless of sleep position.

Why Choose Fiber Instead of a Molded-Foam Cervical Pillow?

The Tri-Core's fiber construction is one of its most useful purchasing distinctions.

Fiber-filled Tri-Core Molded or precision-cut foam pillow
Polyester fiber compresses and rebounds within a sewn pillow shell Foam holds a more permanently defined molded or cut shape
It feels more similar to a traditional filled bed pillow Usually feels more structured and contour-defined
Fiber can be redistributed through normal fluffing Geometry is primarily determined by the foam shape
Available in three overall sizes Size systems vary by model
Firm/Gentle choices alter the amount and resistance of the fill Foam firmness or removable inserts determine resistance

Neither construction is automatically better. The useful question is whether you prefer the give and familiarity of fiberfill or the fixed geometry of molded foam.

Tri-Core Cervical Pillow vs. Other Cervical Pillows

We carry several cervical pillows, but their adjustment systems are substantially different. The standard Tri-Core should be selected for its particular combination of fiber fill, multiple sizes, and back/side sleeping surfaces, rather than because it has the longest feature list.

Balego pillow Construction How fit/support changes Best reason to choose
Tri-Core Cervical Support Pillow Polyester fiber fill Full/Midsize/Petite + Firm/Gentle + two neck rolls You prefer a traditional fiber-filled feel with multiple size choices
Tri-Core Ultimate Cervical Pillow Firm molded polyurethane foam Rotate among 4 back-support positions and 2 side heights You want maximum built-in positioning choices in a molded-foam pillow
Double Core Select Cervical Pillow Polyurethane foam Four interchangeable cervical-roll inserts + two lobe sizes You want to change firmness after purchase
Therapeutica Cervical Pillow Molded foam Choose anatomical size and firmness You want a more measurement-driven back/side sleep fitting system

The Tri-Core Ultimate already has its six built-in support configurations, so those molded-foam positioning details are intentionally not repeated here.

Likewise, the Double Core Select has its own interchangeable Gentle, Medium, Firm, and Extra-Firm inserts. Choose that model when post-purchase firmness adjustment is the priority.

The Therapeutica Orthopedic Cervical Pillow is the better comparison when body measurement and specialized molded back/side sleeping zones are more important than having a fiber-filled pillow.

Standard Tri-Core vs. Tri-Core Ultimate

Despite sharing the Tri-Core name, these are fundamentally different pillows.

Feature Standard Tri-Core Tri-Core Ultimate
Main material Polyester fiber fill Molded polyurethane foam
Overall sizes Full, Midsize, Petite One 26" × 16" × 4" format
Firmness Firm or Gentle on selected sizes Firm
Back support 2 cervical rolls + recessed center 4 support orientations
Side support Raised outer areas 2 side-sleep heights
Main buying decision Size + fiber firmness Preferred built-in orientation
General feel Filled-pillow construction Defined molded-foam construction

Choose the standard Tri-Core when the fiber-filled construction and multiple overall sizes are important.

Choose the Tri-Core Ultimate when you specifically want firm molded foam and multiple built-in support geometries.

Standard Tri-Core vs. Double Core Select

Both pillows allow more choice than a basic single-contour pillow, but they solve different problems.

Feature Tri-Core Cervical Pillow Double Core Select
Material Polyester fiber Polyurethane foam
Overall sizes 3 1
Firmness selected when buying Firm or Gentle No permanent choice required
Change firmness later No interchangeable insert system Yes—4 inserts
Cervical rolls 2 2
Dedicated raised side areas Yes No comparable specialized side platform
Best reason to choose Fiber feel + size choice + back/side design Adjustable firmness inside one foam pillow

The Double Core Select is the stronger choice when you want to experiment with firmness after purchase. The standard Tri-Core is more appropriate when you prefer a fiber-filled bed-pillow construction and want to choose the overall pillow size.

Adjusting to the Tri-Core

A shaped cervical pillow can feel noticeably different from a conventional flat or loosely filled pillow.

recommends beginning with the smaller cervical roll during back sleeping and alternating with your existing pillow as needed while becoming accustomed to the new shape. The manufacturer notes that adjustment may take several nights or longer rather than necessarily feeling familiar on the first night.

The useful goal is not to force yourself onto the larger roll immediately. Start with the configuration that feels appropriate and change the orientation only when the alternative support profile is wanted.

Materials and Care

The Tri-Core uses a cotton/polyester exterior with 100% virgin polyester fiber fill and is listed by Core Products as 100% latex-free.

Care instructions specify cold hand washing with mild soap followed by flat drying. Do not machine wash or machine dry the pillow.

The full, midsize, and petite versions can all be placed inside a standard pillowcase, although the smaller versions will naturally fit more loosely.

What to Expect After Unpacking

The Tri-Core is compressed for shipping. The pillow may therefore appear flatter or differently shaped immediately after the package is opened.

It can take 5–7 days to fully regain its intended shape and performance after being removed from compressed packaging.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Tri-Core Cervical Pillow made of memory foam?

No. The standard Tri-Core uses virgin polyester fiber fill, not memory foam. If molded foam is specifically what you want, compare the Tri-Core Ultimate Cervical Pillow or Therapeutica Cervical Pillow.

Can the Tri-Core be used by side sleepers?

Yes. In addition to the recessed back-sleeping center, the Tri-Core has raised outer areas intended for side sleeping.

Which cervical roll should I use first?

recommends beginning with the smaller roll when sleeping on your back and moving to the larger roll if a more prominent support profile is preferred. What is the difference between Tri-Core Firm and Gentle?

Gentle contains less fiber, making it slightly lower and less firm. The manufacturer describes Gentle as medium/moderate-to-firm rather than soft. The firm provides the more structured option. Gentle is available for full and midsize; petite is firm.

What size Tri-Core should I buy?

The starting guide suggests petite is below approximately 4'10", midsize is around 4'10"–5'6", and full is above approximately 5'6". Those ranges are guidelines rather than guarantees; neck length, proportions, and mattress characteristics can affect selection.

Does it fit a standard pillowcase?

Yes, Tri-Core pillows fit standard pillowcases. Midsize and petite ones will simply have more room inside the case.

Is the Tri-Core a cervical traction device?

No. It is a passive sleeping pillow and does not apply a measured pulling force.

If a healthcare professional has prescribed actual cervical traction, compare the Saunders Cervical Home Traction Device and our separate Saunders Cervical Traction Setup, Angles & Safety Guide. Traction setup, force, treatment time, and safety guidance belong in that dedicated resource rather than being duplicated on a sleeping-pillow page.

Customer Reviews (4.6 / 5 · 5 reviews)

Zoe ★★★★★

I’ve been waking up without that stiff neck feeling since I started using this pillow. The two different loft options make it easy to find the right fit whether I’m on my back or side.

Joseph M. ★★★★★

My neck used to ache every morning until I switched to this, and the two different heights for back versus side sleeping actually made a difference. The fiber fill is firm enough to hold its shape but still cushioned. Two months in and I'm sleeping through the night.

Eva ★★★★★

I was skeptical about the two different edge heights, but the taller side finally supports my neck properly when I sleep on my back. The fiber fill is firm without feeling like a brick, and I've stopped waking up with that stiff neck around 3am.
