NuPrep® Skin Prep Gel, 4 oz Tubes, Pack of 3 | Weaver 10-30

NuPrep® Skin Prep Gel from Weaver and Company is a mildly abrasive electrode-preparation gel that helps reduce skin impedance and improve physiological monitoring results. The manufacturer lists EEG examinations, evoked-potential procedures, ECG stress testing, cardiac rehabilitation monitoring, and cardiac catheter monitoring as examples of intended use.

This box contains three 4 oz / 114 g tubes, manufacturer item 10-30.

NuPrep's job is to prepare the electrode site before placement. It is not an electrode adhesive, ultrasound coupling gel, or stimulation-electrode gel, and Weaver specifically instructs users not to use it with current-inducing electrodes.

For a detailed explanation of where skin preparation ends and electrode paste begins, read our Ten20 vs. NuPrep electrode-prep guide.

What NuPrep Does in an Electrode Workflow

The outer layer of skin contributes electrical resistance at the electrode interface. NuPrep uses a mild abrasive action to prepare that surface so a compatible monitoring electrode can obtain lower impedance and a more usable recording interface. Weaver describes proper skin preparation as important for improving tracings and reducing impedance.

The important distinction is that NuPrep prepares the site; another product or electrode performs the next job.

What you need to do Balego product/resource to consider
Prepare intact skin and reduce impedance before electrode placement NuPrep Skin Prep Gel
Hold and conduct with compatible non-gelled EEG/neurodiagnostic cup electrodes Ten20® Conductive Paste
Apply an adult foam ECG monitoring electrode for compatible stress, Holter or cardiac-rehab workflows Kendall Medi-Trace® 530 ECG Electrodes
Use a tab-style electrode for compatible resting diagnostic ECG/EKG testing 5500 Series Diagnostic Tab Electrodes
Compare other conductive gels and contact media Balego Electromedical Contact Media

For example, Ten20 is an adhesive conductive paste that stays with a compatible non-gelled neurodiagnostic electrode, while NuPrep is the preparation step done beforehand. We cover that distinction in depth in Ten20 vs. NuPrep: Differences, Uses, and Electrode Prep.

How to Use NuPrep Skin Prep Gel

Application differs slightly between reusable/non-disposable monitoring electrodes and cardiac electrodes. Follow the electrode, recording system, and facility instructions in addition to the current NuPrep labeling.

For Non-Disposable Monitoring Electrodes

Place the amount of NuPrep needed on a clean preparation surface. Put a small amount onto a cotton swab and gently prepare an area approximately the size of the electrode using four or five small circular motions.

Remove excess NuPrep, then apply the electrode to the prepared site.

Use substantially less pressure for neonatal and geriatric patients. The manufacturer's key instruction is gentle preparation—not aggressive scrubbing.

For Cardiac Electrodes

Place a small amount of NuPrep onto a gauze pad and gently rub the intended site using four or five circular motions.

Then remove all NuPrep from the electrode site with dry gauze before applying the cardiac electrode.

This cleanup step is important because NuPrep is a preparation product, not the final conductive adhesive layer under the cardiac electrode.

NuPrep Safety and Skin-Preparation Limits

Use NuPrep topically on healthy, intact skin only. Do not apply it on or near open wounds or compromised skin, and do not continue rubbing in an attempt to force an impedance reading lower. Excessive abrasion can injure the skin and may cause persistent irritation or scarring.

Additional caution is appropriate for patients with a history of skin allergy or sensitivity to cosmetics or lotions. If redness, rash, itching, swelling, or another abnormal reaction appears, wash the material off and discontinue use at that site.

NuPrep should not be used with current-inducing electrodes, including workflows in which the electrode intentionally delivers therapeutic electrical current. For TENS, NMES, or EMS, use electrodes and preparation methods specifically authorized by that stimulation device.

NuPrep also contains insoluble material that may interfere with MRI. Before an MRI examination, ensure that NuPrep and other materials from the neurodiagnostic procedure have been completely removed from the electrode sites.

Ingredients

The current manufacturer documentation lists the NuPrep formulation as water, aluminum oxide, 1,2-propanediol, sodium polyacrylate, methylparaben, propylparaben, FD&C Blue 1, FD&C Red 40, and FD&C Yellow 5.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is NuPrep a conductive electrode gel?

NuPrep is more accurately described as a mild abrasive skin-preparation gel. Its purpose is to reduce impedance by preparing the skin before electrode placement. It should not automatically be substituted for a leave-on conductive gel, conductive paste, or electrode adhesive.

For the broader distinction among these products, see our conductive contact-media guide.

What is the difference between NuPrep and Ten20?

NuPrep prepares the skin. Ten20 Conductive Paste provides conductive contact and adhesive hold for compatible non-gelled neurodiagnostic electrodes.

When both are appropriate, the usual sequence is NuPrep first, Ten20 with the electrode second. Our Ten20 vs. NuPrep guide explains that workflow in detail.

Can NuPrep be used with TENS or NMES electrodes?

No. The current NuPrep instructions specifically state that it should not be used with current-inducing electrodes. Use only preparation products and electrodes permitted by the TENS, NMES, EMS, or other stimulation-device instructions.

Can NuPrep be used on broken skin?

No. Current Weaver guidance limits topical use to intact skin and instructs users not to apply NuPrep on or near open wounds or compromised skin.

Hazel ★★★★★

After trying cheaper alternatives that left my skin irritated, the fine grit in this gel gives just enough abrasion to prep electrodes without that harsh scrubbing feeling. The 3-pack should last me a good while since I only need a pea-sized amount per placement. Cleanup is easy with a damp cloth, w

Sebastian ★★★★★

I was skeptical about how much difference a prep gel could make, but after one use my EKG readings were noticeably cleaner without any sticky residue. The three-pack is a practical choice for home or clinic.

Avery ★★★★★

Three tubes is a solid value for anyone who does regular EMG or EEG setups, and the gel's grit is just right for prepping without over-scrubbing the skin. It spreads thin and dries fast, so I can get through a full day of electrode placements without reapplying.
