When Is Sterile Ultrasound Gel Used?

Sterile and nonsterile ultrasound gels are not interchangeable in every clinical situation.

Current infection-control guidance recommends using single-use ultrasound gel labeled sterile for ultrasound performed in preparation for or during percutaneous procedures, as well as for ultrasound involving non-intact skin or areas near fresh surgical sites.

Examples of procedures for which a healthcare facility may require sterile ultrasound coupling gel include ultrasound guidance associated with:

  • vascular access;

  • tissue biopsy;

  • amniocentesis;

  • paracentesis;

  • surgical procedures; and

  • other procedures involving skin or tissue puncture.

The responsible healthcare professional and facility protocol should determine whether sterile gel is required for a particular examination or procedure.

Parker 01-01 vs. 01-20: Don't Confuse These 20 g Packets

Both Parker products contain 20 g of ultrasound transmission gel, but they are not the same product.

If your procedure calls specifically for sterile ultrasound gel, select REF 01-01, not the nonsterile 01-20 packette.

Why do we sell 24 pouches when some websites say 48?

Current packaging configuration places 24 sterile 20 g pouches in each box and two boxes in a manufacturer bundle, for a total of 48 pouches per bundle.

Many older distributor catalogs and marketplace listings still describe REF 01-01 simply as “48 per box.”

Our listing is for one current 24-pouch box.

This makes it possible to purchase a smaller quantity without committing to a full 48-pouch bundle.

Sterile vs. Bacteriostatic Ultrasound Gel

“Bacteriostatic” and “sterile” do not mean the same thing.

A gel described as bacteriostatic should not automatically be considered sterile. When a clinical procedure requires sterile coupling media, use an ultrasound gel specifically labeled sterile.

We also carry nonsterile ultrasound gels, including Aquasonic 100 and TheraSonic Ultrasound Gel, for applications where sterile gel is not required.

Why Is Ultrasound Gel Necessary?

Ultrasound coupling gel reduces the air gap between the transducer and the treatment or imaging surface, allowing ultrasound energy to be transmitted effectively.

Our US Pro 2000 Ultrasound FAQ and Troubleshooting Guide explains how inadequate gel coverage can interfere with proper acoustic coupling during therapeutic ultrasound.

Sterile Aquasonic 100 Frequently Asked Questions

Is Aquasonic 100 sterile?

Standard Aquasonic 100 is not sterile. Sterile Aquasonic 100 REF 01-01 is the separately packaged sterile version.

How many sterile pouches are included?

Each Balego box contains 24 individually packaged 20 g sterile pouches.

Why do older listings show 48 pouches?

Parker's current configuration is 24 pouches per box with two boxes per manufacturer bundle. Many older distributor databases still describe the combined 48-pouch quantity as one box.

Is each pouch single use?

Yes. Each sterile pouch is intended for single use. Please discard any remaining gel after use in accordance with facility procedures.

Can a pouch be used if the wrapper is damaged?

No. Do not use a sterile product from packaging that is opened, punctured, or damaged.

Can sterile Aquasonic 100 be used for diagnostic ultrasound?

Yes. Parker identifies the product for diagnostic ultrasound applications when sterility is indicated.

Can it be used for therapeutic ultrasound?

Yes. Sterile Aquasonic 100 for therapeutic ultrasound applications when sterility is needed.

Can I use regular Aquasonic 100 instead?

For routine procedures where sterility is not required, standard Aquasonic 100 may be the more economical choice.

When sterile ultrasound gel is required by the procedure, equipment instructions, or facility protocol, use a product specifically labeled "sterile."

Is sterile ultrasound gel recommended for ultrasound-guided IV placement?

Current infection-control guidance recommends using single-use sterile ultrasound gel for ultrasonography performed in preparation for or during percutaneous procedures, including placement of peripheral and central intravenous lines.

Healthcare professionals should follow their facility's infection-control procedures and current clinical guidance.

Is the gel the same as electrode gel?

No. Sterile Aquasonic 100 is an ultrasound transmission medium.

Electrical stimulation, ECG, EMG, and other electromedical procedures have different contact-media requirements. We offer a separate selection of conductive gels, lotions, and contact media.

Choosing the Right Ultrasound Gel

Choose Sterile Aquasonic 100 REF 01-01 when your clinical procedure or facility protocol requires individually packaged sterile ultrasound coupling gel.

Choose standard Aquasonic 100 when sterile coupling media is not required and you need Parker's conventional ultrasound transmission gel in packets, tubes, bottles, or bulk configurations.

Clinical-use notice: Product selection and sterility requirements should follow the ultrasound equipment instructions, applicable infection-control procedures, and the direction of the responsible healthcare professional. Do not use an individual pouch if its sterile packaging has been opened or damaged.

Customer Reviews (4.8 / 5 · 5 reviews)

Samuel ★★★★★

I've been through a dozen pouches so far and every single one opens cleanly without tearing—the gel stays in place during long scans without running down the side. The 20g size is perfect for keeping a sterile field without wasting any.

Zoe I. ★★★★★

Having these individually sealed pouches in the exam room is such a relief—no more worrying about cross-contamination, and each one holds just the right amount for a standard scan. The gel spreads smoothly and doesn't leave that sticky residue behind, which my patients appreciate.

Owen ★★★★★

The pouches are the perfect size for a single exam—no wasted gel, no messy squeeze bottles to clean up. Each one opens cleanly and the consistency is just right, stays where you put it without dripping. For sterile procedure trays, these are a no-brainer.
